DECLARATION OF RESPONSIBILITY FOR HANDLING HUMAN BRAIN TISSUE / TISSUE FLUID
Human Brain Tissue Repository (With Special emphasis on Pathological States) has been established as a resource organisation to procure precious human nervous tissue for neurobiological research in the country. The material is collected at postmortem, with informed consent of the close relatives. The material is exclusively for research use. It is not useful for transplantation purposes.
As you know, the possible health hazard of handling postmortem brain tissue has been a cause of anxiety for some time. In some of the disorders of nervous system there is clear evidence of an association with infectious agents; in others the evidence is still controversial. The debate regarding the most appropriate methods of handling such tissue in the laboratory is still continuing.
While providing the fresh nervous tissue to researchers, it is made clear that:
- The material provided may be hazardous to health.
- It is the responsibility of the user to ensure that the safety precautions are followed like wearing gloves and facial mask while handling the human material, have adequate equipment to process the material and ensure proper disposal and disinfection promptly. Treat it as potentially Bio-Hazard material.
- Human Brain Tissue Repository (HBTR-NIMHANS) provides the material for research purposes and only on the express understanding that the staff of HBTR and National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences, Bangalore do not accept any responsibility for damage, injury or death arising from the use of such tissue however they may be caused.
- Do not use the material until a certificate is provided regarding negative status for viral infections like HIV & HBSAg. Please do remember to collect it.
